Description:
A calabash bowl is traditionally a container made from the dried shell of the bottle gourd (Lagenaria siceraria). These bowls have been used for centuries in various cultures, particularly in Africa, for serving food and holding liquids. This wooden version follows the same rounded, bottom-heavy calabash shape.
The bowl itself is turned from Cedar planted for timber in farm forestry in Central Hawke’s Bay. Cedar is a light, aromatic timber that is pleasant to work and well suited to this form. It sits on a Rimu base, giving the piece extra stability so it can be used as a practical everyday bowl.
Finish: Hand finished with Tung oil and Wax.
